How great it would be if we could just tell people to, “PLEASE ADOPT CATS.”  Such a message by itself just isn't sufficiently motivating, so what can an animal charity do to get the public's attention?

The Humane Society is a main proponent of cat adoption across the U.S. As such, I designed this whimsical kitty poster contextually aimed at captivating the hearts of the West Hollywood Branch area residents.

This upscale, trendy, design neighborhood emphasizes style, fine dining, and entertainment in a sophisticated but somewhat flamboyant atmosphere. We are charmed by this free-spirited feline with her own little mini café table, plate of fish, wine, and adorable “heart"—and she is delighted to have a meal!

The plight of homeless, hungry cats takes on a sadder note, however, once we contemplate the poster's serious message to adopt these animals. This needed emotional appeal is best achieved through humorous, user-centered visual rhetoric, specific to a particular audience.

Playful, fluid lines and bright contrasting colors convey a sense of eccentric cheeriness, but the colors signal other international symbolism as well, such as the color red for “urgency” in all cultures. The poster conveys a tongue-in-cheek, lighthearted mood and tone, while the chef’s houndstooth checks on the poster border help establish the ethos of a gourmet cuisine theme.
